Jeremy S. Faust, MD, Editor in Chief

Jeremy Faust, MD is an emergency medicine physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an instructor at Harvard Medical School. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, The Atlantic, and many others. Faust was the founding writer for Brief19.com, a daily review of news related to COVID-19, and is co-host of the award-winning medical education podcast FOAMcast.

David M. Aronoff, MD, FIDSA, FAAM

Dr. Aronoff is John B. Hickam Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. Primary areas of focus include mechanisms of disease pathogenesis involved in bacterial infections causing chorioamnionitis, preterm birth, stillbirth and neonatal sepsis. His global health work includes collaborative projects in Brazil, Jordan and South Africa.

Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH

Dr. Deepak L. Bhatt is the executive director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). He is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and editor-in-chief of the Harvard Heart Letter. Dr. Bhatt specializes in cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology. Dr. Bhatt received his medical degree from Cornell University and his Master in Public Health degree from Harvard University. He completed an internal medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Bhatt completed fellowships in cardiology, interventional cardiology, and cerebral and peripheral vascular intervention, as well as serving as Chief Interventional Fellow at Cleveland Clinic. He also served as Associate Director of the Cleveland Clinic Cardiovascular Coordinating Center.

Beth D. Darnall, PhD

At Stanford University, Dr. Darnall is an associate professor in the department of anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine. She is principal investigator for major clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Patient-Centered Outcomes Institute (PCORI). She has twice testified to the U.S. Congress on pain and opioids in America. She currently serves on the NIH Interagency Pain Research Coordinating Committee. She is passionate about improving patient access to evidence-based behavioral medicine and preventing iatrogenic harms.

Judy E. Davidson, DNP RN MCCM FAAN

Dr. Davidson serves as a nurse scientist for University of California San Diego supporting nurses with project development, presentation and publication. Her research focuses on workplace wellness, and specifically mental health issues, suicide prevention and suicide amongst healthcare professionals. Her team developed the first suicide prevention program for nurses which has been heralded Edge Runner status by the Academy of Nurses: a model for replication. Today she will talk to us about research results, evidence-based strategies for prevention, and regulatory issues that warrant advocacy for change.

Tsion Firew, MD, MPH

Dr. Tsion Firew is an assistant professor of emergency medicine and clinical faculty at Columbia University in New York and serves as an advisor to the Minister of Health on Emergency Care and Strategic Partnership. During her fellowship, she received her Masters in Public Health from Columbia University in Population and Family Health along with a certificate in Humanitarian Assistance. She has had the opportunity to respond in a humanitarian crisis in Haiti and Mosul, Iraq during the war against ISIS. She worked as an intern WHO's HeadQuarter in Geneva under the WHO’s Emergency, Trauma, and Acute Care program.

Anders M. Gilberg

Anders Gilberg is Senior Vice President, Government Affairs for the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA). Anders leads the Association's advocacy efforts in Washington to help medical group practices meet the challenges posed by today's rapidly evolving health care marketplace. Anders holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Pennsylvania State University,and a master's degree in government administration from the Fels Center for Government at the University of Pennsylvania.

Jessica A. Gold, MD

Dr. Gold is an Assistant Professor and Director of Wellness, Engagement, and Outreach in the Department of Psychiatry at Washington University in St Louis School of Medicine. For her clinical practice, she primarily sees undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, staff, and healthcare workers, and she teaches medical students and residents. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A. and M.S. in Anthropology) and the Yale School of Medicine (M.D.). She completed her residency training in Adult Psychiatry at Stanford University where she served as chief resident from 2017-2018. She also writes regularly for the popular press and has been featured in, among others, The Washington Post, the New York Times, Self, InStyle, TIME, Newsweek, Glamour, and Forbes. She is very active on social media, particularly X (), and was named one of Medscape’s top 20 physician influencers on social media in 2019.

Amy F. Ho, MD

Dr. Amy Faith Ho is the associate medical director and core faculty at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, and is the host of MedPage's monthly podcast, Anamnesis. She also practices at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas and holds academic titles as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M School of Medicine and Assistant Professor at Texas Christian University - University of North Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine. A nationally published speaker and writer, she has been widely published and featured in venues like Chicago Tribune, Forbes, TEDx, Medscape, MedPage, NPR, and more. Her topics of expertise are healthcare policy and disparities, harm reduction, operations and administration, and narrative medicine and media. She has been a lecturer at has been a lecturer at AAEM, SAEM, ACEP, Texas Medical Association, and American Medical Association on various topics in medical practice. As part of her work in medical media, she has also been the featured physician on several episodes of the cable TV show Untold Stories of the ER (TLC/Discovery), which recreates ED medical cases for a wide audience, and she works as a medical script consultant for several primetime TV shows. She completed medical school at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, residency at University of Chicago, an administrative fellowship at Integrative Emergency Services, and is currently completing a MPH at University of Alabama Birmingham.

Jeff E. Keller, MD, FACEP

Dr. Keller is a Board Certified Emergency Physician with 25 years of emergency medicine practice experience before moving full time into his “true calling” of correctional medicine. He is Medical Director of Badger Medical which provides medical services to several jails and juvenile facilities in Idaho.

K. Edwin Leap, MD

Dr. Leap is an emergency medicine physician, writer, and public speaker who received his Doctor of Medicine from West Virginia University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Methodist Hospital of Indiana. Dr. Leap is an award winning columnist who writes about a wide variety of topics. He has a special interest in rural emergency care and physician advocacy.

Sean C. Mackey, MD, PhD

Dr. Mackey is Chief of the Division of Pain Medicine, Director of the Systems Neuroscience and Pain Laboratory and Redlich Professor of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, (by courtesy) Neurosciences and Neurology at Stanford University. A physician scientist focused on pain, neuroscience, outcomes and policy research. He is the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Dr. Mackey received his BSE and MSE in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D in Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as MD from the University of Arizona. Dr. Mackey is the author of over 200 journal articles, book chapters, abstracts, and popular press pieces in addition to numerous national and international lectures.

Heath B. McAnally, MD, MSPH

Dr. Heath McAnally is an anesthesiologist, pain physician and addictionologist. He serves as the medical director at Northern Anesthesia & Pain Medicine, LLC (Eagle River, Alaska) and as a clinical instructor for the University of Washington School of Medicine's Dept. of Anesthesia & Pain Medicine. He also currently serves as the vice-president for the Alaska Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and the Medical Liaison for Set Free Alaska.

Bernadette M. Melnyk, PhD, RN, APRN-CNP, EBP-C, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN

Dr. Melnyk is vice president for Health Promotion, University chief wellness officer, and professor and dean of the College of Nursing at The Ohio State University. She also is a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Ohio State’s College of Medicine. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from West Virginia University, a Master of Science degree with a specialization in nursing care of children and pediatric nurse practitioner from the University of Pittsburgh, and her PhD in clinical research from the University of Rochester, where she also completed her post-master’s certificate as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

Dr. Spencer Nadolsky is a board-certified family and obesity physician who has helped thousands of patients over the past 8 years lose weight and keep it off. Dr. Spencer saw the inefficiency of working only in the clinic so his dream was to help people lose weight via the internet using a combination of personal in-depth coaching and telemedicine.

Mikkael A. Sekeres, MD, MS

Mikkael Sekeres is Professor of Medicine with Tenure and Chief of the Division of Hematology at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He earned a medical degree and a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr Sekeres completed his postgraduate training at Harvard University, finishing an internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in hematology-oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. He is chair of the medical advisory board of the Aplastic Anemia and Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) International Foundation, and formerly chaired the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee of the F.D.A.

Dr Sekeres is a member of the American Society of Hematology, where he serves on the Executive Committee and chairs the Committee on Communications. His research focuses on patients with MDS and older adults with acute myeloid leukemia, and he has been the national and international primary study investigator on dozens of phase I/II/III trials. He is the author or co-author of over 450 manuscripts and 650 abstracts. He was the inaugural editor-in-chief of the ASH Clinical News magazine; he is on the editorial board of several journals; has written 100 essays for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, Slate, and The Hill, among others; and has authored 8 books, including When Blood Breaks Down: Life Lessons from Leukemia (The MIT Press 2020) and Drugs and the FDA: Safety, Efficacy, and the Public’s Trust (The MIT Press 2022).

Deborah Serani, Psy.D

Dr. Deborah Serani is a psychologist, professor and award-winning author. A licensed psychologist in practice over 30 years in New York, Dr. Serani specializes in anxiety, depression, trauma and postpartum disorders. She works with children, teens and adults. Dr. Serani is also a senior professor at Adelphi University, and a community supervisor in the clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at Long Island University.

Dr. Shaukat is a gastroenterologist and clinical epidemiologist. She is the Robert M. and Mary H. Glickman Professor of Medicine and Director GI Outcomes at NYU School of Medicine. A highly regarded clinician, distinguished epidemiologist, and prolific researcher, Dr. Shaukat has published extensively on colorectal cancer screening, prevention, and quality indicators for colonoscopy.

Andy M. Slavitt

Andy Slavitt is founder and chairman of United States of Care, a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to ensuring all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care. He’s a senior partner in Town Hall Health Ventures, which focuses on investments in businesses working in underserved areas of health care, and a senior advisor at the Bipartisan Policy Center; he also serves on several health care boards. Slavitt’s decades of health care experience include serving as acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services from 2015 to 2017.

Matthew A. Spinelli, MD, MAS

Dr. Spinelli is an Assistant Professor in the Division of HIV, ID, and Global Medicine at UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital. He sees patients in the Positive Health Program and the PrEP clinic at Ward 86 and in the Infectious Diseases service at San Francisco General Hospital. His research focuses on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) implementation, adherence interventions, and service delivery innovation.

Dr. Thornburg joined the faculty of the University of Rochester in June 2008. She received her undergraduate degree from Kalamazoo College and her medical degree from Wayne State University. She completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology and her fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine Perinatology-High Risk Obstetrics) at the University of Rochester.

He is an Air Force Academy graduate, a Harvard-trained surgeon, and a former congressional health policy advisor, and has served as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow at the National Academy of Medicine. Williams and his work have been featured in outlets like the Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, CNN, and Newsweek.
